LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CAMP
On Sunday, May 27, 2007 Nashville Inner City Ministry began the first of two weeks of Leadership Development Camp at Camp HyLake near McMinnville, TN. At capacity for both weeks, it was evident what a much anticipated and appreciated event this has become. Please visit the GALLERY to see pictures of these two weeks and continue reading to learn about how our campers and staff spent their time.
Camp Hylake is a beautiful setting, far away from and far different than, the crowded city and communities that inner city youth are accustomed to living in. A week at Leadership Development Camp gives our students an opportunity to focus on their personal lives and on their individual growth as Christians.
Each cabin of young people is lead by a mentor (or mentors) that selects his or her group of campers from among the students they have been teaching and training throughout the year. In fact, within this one week, a mentor at camp will spend more time with their students than they will have spent with them the entire year in a weekly Bible class.
Our support staff personnel includes Kitchen, Crafts, Activities, Mini-camp, Waterfront, and Transportation, as well as a nurse. Each of these stafff members encourage the mentoring relationship and provide activities, meals and opportunities for our students to grow in their leadership abilities. The memories and learning experiences from these weeks at camp will last a lifetime.
The theme for this year's camp was "Lifeguard: Life Lessons from the book of James". Daily lessons drawn from this theme were:
"Money, Money, Money"
"Faith or Fiction"
"My Brother's Keeper"
These daily themes were taught and reinforced in daily Bible classes, learning activities, praise and worship time, evening devotionals, meal-time devotional thoughts, mentoring times and other leadership training exercises.
In addition to the time spent on each day's theme, campers and counselors filled their days with activities that included art and crafts, field activities (tug-a-war, kickball, softball, 3-ball, spiderball, human fooseball, waterballon volleyball, volleyball, etc.) canoeing, paddleboating, kayaking, fishing and swimming. At night the campers were challenged and entertained with NICM's version of several popular games shows including Deal Or No Deal, Match Game, Pyramid and others.
The staff, mentors, counselors and youth of Nashville Inner City Ministry would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to make this year's camp such a huge success.
Differences were made that will last a lifetime!
